So start thinking about your entries for the 2008 SPJ Utah Headliners Journalism Awards Contest. Deadline for entering is Friday, Feb. 15. The entry form will be mailed out soon. So start clipping.
Are you a member of SPJ? Or thinking about joining? If so, you’ll get a break on the entry fees — this year, SPJ members get a $5 discount on each entry. So what are you waiting for? We don’t care WHEN you join . just as long as you have your member ID number on the entry form.

Want to volunteer to help out with the contest this year? On a related note, here’s a message from our chapter president (for those who want to help out with the contest this year):
A common thing I hear from many of our members is: “I’d like to get more involved in SPJ, but I don’t have a lot of time.” There’s now a solution.
The Utah Headliners Chapter is starting up a sort of “volunteer bank,” a list of names of people who would be willing to give just a little of their time to help advance First Amendment freedoms and professional journalism. How it works is simple: Just e-mail us to sign up and we’ll put your name on the list, so we can call on you to help with various projects throughout the year. It may be making a phone call or writing a letter on behalf of SPJ, helping plan an upcoming event or speaking to a group of students about journalism. The goal is that you would be doing as little or as much as you want to for SPJ.
I believe that the more diverse voices and viewpoints we get, the better our organization will be. If you are interested in being part of the “volunteer bank,” please e-mail your name and contact info to Ben Winslow at winslow.ben@gmail.com.
