Reporter’s privilege panel discussion

A reporter’s privilege panel will take place on the BYU campus on
Thursday, September 18, 2008. The panelists are three attorneys with
expertise in issues surrounding subpoenas to journalists for
newsgathering-related information. The panel will begin at 7 p.m. in
B092 JFSB.

Jeff Hunt is a Salt Lake City media attorney and former newspaper
reporter. Dayle Jeffs is a Provo attorney who served on the Advisory
Committee whose work in 2006 and 2007 ultimately led to adoption of
Utah Rule 509, granting reporters a qualified privilege against
subpoenas. RonNell Anderson Jones is a BYU law professor who has
conducted scholarly research on the privilege.

This event is being held in conjunction with the Media Law Resource
Center in New York City, as part of a nationwide education effort on
reporter’s privilege issues. The McCormick Tribune Foundation has
given a grant to MLRC to make this happen.
