SPJ Board Meeting 5/1/10

Members present: Allison Hess, Linda Petersen, Marie Mischel, Tom Haraldsen, Jim Fisher, Ben Winslow, Amy K. Stewart, Sheryl Worsley

Minutes from February meeting approved.

Jim holds discussion on menu for the June 11 banquet. Jim suggests Beef Wellington, portobello mushroom for vegetarian option. Formal invitation will include option for vegetarian. Amy suggests chicken, but recognizes that her father is a cattle rancher and it would support the hard-working cattle industry. Chicken passes.

City Weekly has graciously agreed to cover the bar.

First e-mail for “save the date” to go out by Tuesday. Print invitations to go follow on May 10. Urging to pay by PayPal by charging $30 in advance, $40 at the door. RSVP deadline is May 31.

Weber State University will do the awards video for $1,500. The video will include only the first place winners, a booklet will be compiled with the second/third place finishers. Categories coming back, only some newspaper A and C still outstanding.

2- Black Hole/ Sunshine

Don presented this year’s Black Hole/Sunshine, got a mention in the Logan Herald-Journal.

Sheryl has raised issue about lawmakers and e-mail accounts being deleted (Kevin Garn issue). She is meeting with legal counsel to consider options. SPJ may support.

X-Change: The courts has set a 10,000 search limit. Nancy Volmer with the Administrative Office of the Courts says they will charge on top of 10,000 search.

3- Ethics/ Money

SPJ national is offering $2,500 grants. Tom filled out a grant.

4- Next meeting May 29 for SPJ Board viewing.
